Future Projects

Hamomi SmileThe Hamomi students need clothes, shoes and socks. The easiest way to accomplish this is through a uniform, which Kenyan students all wear anyway. To get these for all the 100 students would cost about $2000 USD.

Installing Running Water Hamomi presently functions without running water. The children are forced to come to the teachers' office and ask permission from a teacher each time they need a cup of water from one of the canisters due to the limited supply. If the children had simple access to water, they could drink quickly in-between classes instead of wasting time walking up to the office. Children would have more time and be better hydrated, leading to better learning. Running water would also act as a good first step in the transition towards becoming a home with proper restroom facilities and a feeding program. Total installation would cost roughly $450 USD.

Water Supply

BathroomFollowing the installation of running water, Hamomi would be able to install functional, sanitary toilets. The ones they are using now fall short of anybody's standards. This construction would cost about $625 USD for two toilets.

 Shack

Urgent

TearsIn October of 2007, there was a Chicken Pox outbreak at Hamomi, 21 pupils got chicken pox and needed to go to the doctor to take Acetaminophen, Oatmeal baths and Acyclovir. There is a bill of $500 USD still to be paid. When bills go unpaid, Hamoni's reputation suffers and the likelihood of future treatments on credit lessens. Luckily this outbreak was something as benign as chicken pox, but in the future, if there is an outbreak of something more dangerous, Hamoni needs the assurance that their children will be cared for. Hopefully, we will be able to insure all the children before anything more happens.

Hamomi Children Studying Hard

Deplorable ClassroomBuilding New Classrooms

At present, the children are learning in these less than adequate conditions with no windows, allowing hardly any light, with rocks functioning as floors, a barely passable chalkboard, not enough space for all the children and nowhere for the teacher to sit, meaning the teacher needs to leave the classroom and walk all the way up to the office to mark exercises, wasting everybody's precious time. The children will learn better in a brighter, more spacious environment, and with a teacher present at all times. A decent classroom's construction costs roughly $750 USD.

Expansion Program

Becoming a Home
To buy the land that Hamomi is renting now at about $150/month, it will cost about $15,000 USD. Once the land is bought, expanding and living sustainably will be much more possible. If this land could be acquired, the stress of paying for rent each month would be eliminated and Hamomi could continue to grow. This growth includes turning Hamomi into a home instead of placing the kids with guardians within the slum who cannot care for the children sufficiently or be adequately monitored. This would mean building dormitories, building a dining hall, setting up a feeding program, building bathrooms, hiring housemothers, etc.
