Food is Necessary to Achieve our Goals

Our dream is to produce well-rounded adults who will participate in the cyclical nature of Hamomi by giving back to the organization that offered them the opportunity to not only survive, but to excel. To achieve this dream we have to start at the very bottom which means giving our students the tools, at every level, to succeed. The most basic tool is access to food.

Malnutrition causes a chain reaction that debilitates a child's ability to learn and develop into a successful adult. A weakened immune system caused by malnutrition leads to chronic illness. A child who is sick has more absences from school and is always struggling to catch up. Likewise, when a child who has not eaten in days attends school, they lack the focus to absorb what they are taught. While we cannot limit our students' exposure to disease, we can feed them and give their bodies the strength to fight against common illnesses which will increase their attendance and their ability to learn.

Feeding Program

For the first three months of 2008, Hamomi was able to feed its students one meal a day. Immediately, attendance soared and we noticed that students scored better on tests and were alert and focused. However, due to limited funding, we were forced to cancel this valuable program and the progress we had made slid back to its former state.

After a few very successful months of fundraising and the donation of solar cookers, in February 2009 we determined that the time was right to restart the feeding program. Since that time we have successfully fed all 104 kids and 10 teachers two meals per day, six days a week. And like before, the results have been phenomenal.

Access to food is a basic human right that no person should go without. With your support we are confident that this program will continue to meet the needs of our students for years to come.

How you can Help

While all our children are currently supported by family or guardians, the dire poverty they live in does not guarantee regular, nutritious meals. By donating to our feeding program, you can help provide our children with their most basic need: food.

  • $6.32 per month to feed each student!

  • Complete Cost: $720 per month

  • Feeds 104 students and 10 volunteers

  • Provides children with 2 meals per day, six days per week

  • Offers nutritious, local cuisine - beans, rice, and porridge.

Please help us continue to fund our feeding program and guarantee our students have access to a better life and future. No child should have to go to bed hungry, no matter where they live.

Cooking Baskets

We purchased insulating hay baskets from Solar Cookers International. The baskets are hands-off, allowing the teachers to manage the food without disrupting their packed schedules.  This also eliminates the cost of a cook. The baskets only require us to boil water and then we leave the rice and beans to cook on their own for about an hour.
